Ear hook guide: brass, surgical steel or 925 silver?
For many of our earrings you can choose the material of the ear hook yourself. Here you'll find out how the options differ – and which one suits you best.
Brass
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a warm, golden tone. It goes especially well with feathers, wood and cones. Over time brass can darken and develop a patina; a soft cloth or a brass polish brings back the shine. People with very sensitive skin often prefer surgical steel or silver.
Surgical steel
Surgical steel is a robust, rust-free stainless steel with a cool, silvery tone. It practically doesn't tarnish and is easy to care for. Many people with sensitive ears tolerate it well. As stainless steel can contain small, firmly bound amounts of nickel depending on the alloy, we recommend 925 silver if in doubt and if you have a known nickel allergy.
925 sterling silver
925 silver consists of 92.5% pure silver. It is a classic jewellery metal that is well tolerated by most people. Silver tarnishes over time – a silver polishing cloth quickly brings back the shine. Stored dry and airtight, it tarnishes much more slowly.
In short
- Warm and natural: brass
- Easy-care and robust: surgical steel
- Classic and well suited to many sensitive ears: 925 silver
If you're unsure because of an allergy, it's best to ask your doctor – and feel free to write to us via the contact page if you have questions about a particular design.
