Dread jewellery size guide

For your dread bead or dread pendant to sit well, the hole diameter is what matters most. Here you'll find out how to find the right size for your dreads.

How to measure your dread

  1. Take a ruler, a calliper or a strip of paper.
  2. Measure the thickness of your dread where the jewellery will sit – dreads are usually slightly thinner towards the tip than at the root.
  3. With a strip of paper: wrap it once around the dread, mark the circumference and divide it by 3.14. The result is the diameter.

Which hole diameter fits?

Choose a hole diameter that is the same as or slightly larger than the thickness of your dread. That way the jewellery slides on easily without slipping.

  • Thin dreads, braids and plaits: smaller hole sizes from about 4–6 mm
  • Medium dreads: about 7–9 mm
  • Thick dreads and locs: from about 10 mm upwards

The hole sizes available for a product are shown directly in the options on the product page.

Tips for putting it on

  • Wire dread beads and the rings on feather pendants can be gently bent open a little and closed again.
  • To slide it on, you can lightly twist the tip of the dread or use a thread loop to help.
  • Better one size too big than too tight – a bead that is too tight can roughen the dread.
